The history begins on June 6, 1944 in Normandy at Omaha Beach . The captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) and his men land on a beach where the battle makes rage. The American soldiers are made massacre on the Normandy beaches and only those survive which are put safe from a dune. But impossible to go further. With the assistance of torpedes bangalores, American units cross the various obstacles and eliminate the last German defenders. The losses are appalling.

In England, the Staff realizes that 3 of the 4 brothers of the Ryan family died in the combat. One on the ground of the Pacific islands, the second at Omaha Beach and the last at Utah Beach. A mission of help is organized to find the last of the four brothers, James F. Ryan (Matt Damon), parachuted behind the enemy lines few hours before the landing, with the 101st Airborne division. Captain Miller, accompanied for the occasion by a small group of elite of 8 men, starts to research this Ryan. But the soldiers who accompany him start to doubt the mission and ask questions but the doubt is erased when, in a Norman village in ruins, one of the soldiers of the row is killed by a German sniper. The search for Ryan intensifies what does not exclude sometimes from the errors concerning the identity of the parachutists that they meet.

It is only later, by chance, than Miller finds Ryan. This last is charged to supervise a very significant bridge on Merderet. The captain announces him that he lost his three brothers and that he must return at his place, but Ryan does not want to give up his friends who defended this bridge as much as him. Why would he deserve more than another to return to the country ? Miller then decides to remain a little with Ryan and to await the American reinforcements. But he knows that German will attack before the arrival of these reinforcements. Then, he decides to strengthen the city for the enemy attack.

German attacks ! The battle makes rage between a regiment S.S. with units armoured and the small group of American. Finally, at the last time, whereas the men of Miller beat a retreat and that German cross the bridge with their tanks, of the allied planes make flee the attackers. On the 8 men left to research Ryan, only 2 will manage to draw some. Ryan, on his side, is repatriated at his place, in the United States, in Iowa. He will try to live best than he will be able to honour the sacrifice of these men who died to save his life.
