At the time
of my research on the landing, I was lucky to meet a French veteran, Maurice
Chauvet, 1st b.f.m. commando, who made the landing at Sword , with
176 other French.
He was, in
1961, military adviser for the film "the Longest Day".
He was asked
to him whether such or such scene were exact compared to the true unloading.
But the realizer wanted that his film obtains excellent financial re-entries
then, he changed the history of the landing:
- To utilize
nuns during the attack of the casino so that the members of the catholic people
will see the film.
- That the
casino resembles a building of 8 floors in order to give him importance.
- That the
landings are represented like splendid general rushes.
- That the
German soldiers are clean and beautiful so that the German public will see
the film.
- The barges
used by the allies in film are barges of the American marine of 1960, modern
barges.
In short,
you will have understood it, this film has as only goal only to make money
but what is even more inadmissible above all, it is that this film deforms
the history.
The film
remains beautiful, interesting nevertheless, but not really near to reality,
which is a pity well.
Maurice Chauvet
tells : "I know what it really occurred during the attack. The casino
was in fact only a blockaus from which German drew. Never there was large
the barraque high one of "80 meters", nor of nuns! Before the landing,
German had destroyed the casino and had run concrete in the place and they
built there this blockaus which today was destroyed."
Here the
photograph of the bunker of the casino having been tackled on June 6, 1944
by French with Ouistreham. (Click
