A little less than a year after the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Normandy landing, Ubisoft and Gearbox Softwar launched in March 2005 this new game entitled “Brothers in Arms: Road to hill 30”.

Context of the game

The player plays Sergeant Matt Backer, who is part of the 101st US Airborne Division. After two years of intense training in the United States and England, the paratroopers of this division took part in one of the most important operations of the Second World War: the Normandy Landing. Dropped shortly after midnight on June 6, 1944 alongside the men of the 82nd Airborne Division in the region of Sainte-Mère-Eglise, members of the 101st had to accomplish different missions such as taking control of strategic crossroads, hamlets and villages in Normandy , or the destruction of enemy installations. In the days following the American parachutages over Normandy, the characters of the game, which are mostly inspired by soldiers who really existed, must conquer a series of objectives during the Battle of Normandy.

What’s new

For the first time in the history of video games of World War II, the player embodies and commands characters that actually existed. The scenery of the missions was created from photographs taken by the US Army during the Battle of Normandy, and the missions are themselves carried out taking into account the testimonies of the veterans.

From a technical point of view, the artificial intelligence is impressive: the enemy moves taking care not to be noticed, he knows how to take shelter, he now takes the initiative and obeys patterns Relevant to the situations encountered. “Brothers in Arms” is a real revolution in the world of war games.
