USS Osprey history

The USS Osprey was launched on 24 August 1940 and entered service on 16 December of the same year. After a series of sea exercises, it carried out his first missions and convoy escorts in the Caribbean Sea before being deployed on 8 November 1942 as part of Operation Torch off Morocco.

On April 3, 1944, the Osprey traveled to England to participate in Operation Neptune. As part of the 7th Wing, it operates before D-Day in the Tor Bay area. On June 5, 1944, as it made his way to the landing beaches to clear the sea lanes for the benefit of the warships and troop transports, it struck an underwater mine and caught fire.

Unable to regain control of the minesweeper, the crew had to abandon the USS Osprey which was lost at nightfall.
