Junkers Ju 87 "Stuka" history

The Stuka (initial of Sturtzkampfflugzeug, which means "dive bomber" in German) is one of the most famous German World War II bombers. More than 5,700 Stuka aircrafts have been built.

In 1935 the first Ju 87 model manufactured by Junkers took off. This lightweight ground attack bomber appeared immediately as an excellent aircraft, especially since it was heavily armed. Tested during the Spanish Civil War, the Stuka took part in 1940 in the Battle of Britain, during which it was very vulnerable if it was not escorted by fighters.

Used in 1942 on the eastern front, where it made anti-tanks bombing missions, the Junkers Ju 87 took part specifically to small offensive during the Battle of Normandy during the 1944 summer.

The Stuka was equipped with a siren that sounded when the aircraft stole to its target. The bomber was also a psychological weapon for both military and civilian populations.
