MP 40 history

In 1938, the German Army is staffing a new sub-machine guns, known as MP 38. This weapon, with a retractable butt, must accompany the paratroopers and tank and vehicles crews. But the encouraging performance of the weapon made that it would equip the German infantry in general.

In 1940, German engineers decided to develop a new MP 38 model, which shall equip the Wehrmacht immediately, called PM 40 and more commonly nicknamed the "Schmeisser".

One of the bigest fault of the weapon lies in its structure because of its lack of external protection. Thus, after a long or intense use of the MP-40, the weapon can heat and burn the hands of the gunner. However, the famous "Schmeisser" offers a high rate of fire and good accuracy at relatively short distance, what has expand its use in the German Army.
