B-25 Mitchell history

At the beginning of the Second World War, the American military engineers decided to equip the U.S. Air Force with a new light bomber.

Thus, in September 1939, an aircraft was designed and a prototype was manufactured a few months later and in the year 1941, the Air Force received the first U.S. light bombers called B-25 which were immediately equipped for active service.

Handy and lightweight, the B-25, built by the North American company, took part in the conflict of the Second World War in many missions such as strategic bombing, maritime patrol and anti-submarine actions.

The B-25 Mitchell was immortalized when the U.S. Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle launched on April 18 1942 a reprisal raid after the attack on Pearl Harbor and attacked the city of Tokyo with 16 B-25 bombers.

More than 9,800 B-25 Mitchell bombers were build during the Second World War.
