History of the Panzerschreck
In
1943, the German troops fighting American soldiers on the North
Africa front captured many copies of the "Bazooka"
M1 rocket launcher. The German military decided to build a
rocket launcher that could be used several times, like the American
"Bazooka" (the Germans were equipped at that time by
the Panzerfaust 30 only).
The
first prototype of the Raketen Panzerbüchse 43,
nicknamed "Panzerschreck" ("terror of the tank"),
was produced in 1943, then the model was built on a larger scale
and it equipped the same year the antitank teams of the German
army.
Feared by the Allied tank crews, this RPzB 43 "Panzerschreck"
rocket launcher worked on the same mode (electrical firing mechanism)
than the US M1 Bazooka rocket launcher.
