Stielhandgranate
24 history
Produced
in 1939, the grenade Stielhandgranate 24 (also known as "mash-press"
because of its shape) between the same years in staffing in the
German Army.
The
grenade did - structurally - not look like its European or American
counterparts, because the German military decided to focus on
the destructive power of TNT, rather than on the effects of classic
metal frag grenades.
Thus, the Stielhandgranate 24 was composed of nearly
twice more TNT that of grenade Mills No. 36, despite the high
cost of the explosive during the Second World War.
The explosive is compacted in a cylinder that fits on top of a
wooden handle. Engineers could place different types of explosives,
while keeping the same wooden handle.
