Coward On The Beach is the first in the adventures of Dick Coward, a reluctant World War II hero with an unfortunate knack for being in just the right place at exactly the wrong time.
From the burning sands of the Western Desert to the frozen wastes of Stalingrad, from the mountains of Crete to the forests of the Ardennes, from the blue skies above England during the Battle of Britain to the emerald hell of Burma's jungles, Dick has been there, done that, and survived only by the skin of his teeth.

But for Dick there are worse things than death: the thought of losing his beloved Gina to one of his many irksome love-rivals; the hideous possibility that the glorious family estate might end up in the hands of his snivelling, devious, cowardly younger brother James.

It will all depend on the war. Dick's fire-eating father General Ajax Coward VC has decided that the family seat will be passed on to whichever of his sons has the best war. And up to this point, James has somehow managed to wangle far more medals than Dick. There's only one gong, in fact, that could guarantee Dick his rightful inheritance. Unfortunately, VCs tend to be awarded posthumously.

Still, Dick couldn't ask for a better companion. Tom Price - variously Dick's riding instructor, confidante, batman and later platoon sergeant - is the man largely responsible for keeping our hero alive. Having lost one of his testicles at Passchendaele (to the same whizz-bang that lopped off General Coward's leg), Sgt Price is under no illusions about the glamour of war or the glory of dying for your country. For Sgt Price, survival is all. The question is, will he ever get the message through to that young idiot Dick?
