La batterie « Marcouf » a eu un très grand rôle dans la défense de la côte face au débarquement allié, elle a considérablement ralenti l?avance des hommes de la 4° division d?infanterie débarqués ou e sur Utah beach dans leur marche sur Cherbourg.
La bataille pour la prise de cette batterie engendra beaucoup de pertes, en effet 307 soldats allemands sont morts pour la défendre et environ autant d?Américains pour la prendre, sans compter les 35 civils morts suite à une terrible erreur de bombardement.

The Marcouf/Crisbecq Battery played a major role in the defense of the coast facing the Allied landing. It slowed considerably the advance towards Cherbourg of the men of the 4th Infantry Division that landed at Utah Beach.
The fighting over the battery took a heavy toll, 307 German soldiers indeed died to defend it, about as many Americans died to take it, to which must be added the 35 civilians who died following a tragic error in a bombing raid.
