Visit Normandy in two days – Day 1

This travel idea has been established by the D-Day Overlord website to allow you to visit the historical area of the Battle of Normandy, according to your possibilities. On this page, discover the idea of a “short stay” course to be carried out in two days (a weekend, for example).

Day 1 – Morning

Place of departure: Caen (14)
Direction: Bénouville (14)
Itinerary (time of the journey by car: 15 minutes): leave Caen direction Hérouville-Saint-Clair, then take Avenue Georges Clemenceau (D 515) towards Ouistreham. Exit at Hérouville-Saint-Clair and continue on the D 515. Enter Bénouville, head towards Cabourg, cross the bridge Pegasus Bridge and park at the Pegasus Bridge museum (100 meters on the left after the bridge)

Visit:
– Pegasus Bridge Airborne Troop Museum
– Walking tour of the historic site near the bridge

Location: Bénouville (14)
Direction: Ouistreham – Riva-Bella (14) – Sword Beach
Itinerary (time of the journey by car: 10 minutes): Exit Bénouville towards the west and take the direction of Ouistreham. Enter the town, head for the Car Ferry, and follow Riva-Bella along the coastal road towards Colleville-Montgomery.
Car park: car park (paying) along the coastal road, stop if possible near the casino
Visit:
– Walking tour of the historic site: Sword Beach, monuments, beach defenses

Place of departure: Ouistreham – Riva-Bella (14) – Sword Beach
Direction: Courseulles-sur-Mer (14) – Juno Beach
Itinerary (travel time: 35 minutes): exit Ouistreham direction Colleville-Montgomery on the D 35a (coastal road). In Colleville-Montgomery take the direction of Lion-sur-Mer, then Luc-sur-Mer, then Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer, then enter Courseulles-sur-Mer. Follow the signs that lead to the Juno Beach Center, join the Juno Beach Center Museum car park.

Visit:
– Walking tour of the historic site: the beach, the Croix de Lorraine, the bunkers
– Visit of the Juno Beach Center Museum, in honor of the Canadian soldiers who landed in Normandy.
– Eating on site

Day 1 – Afternoon

Place of departure: Courseulles-sur-Mer (14) – Juno Beach
Direction: Arromanches-les-Bains (14) – Gold Beach – On the heights of the city
Itinerary (journey time by car: 20 minutes): exit Courseulles-sur-Mer direction Asnelles-sur-Mer on the D 514. At the exit of Asnelles-sur-Mer, overlooking the artificial port , Park your car in the parking lot from the view.
Car park: parking from the point of view on the heights of Arromanches
Visit:
– Observe the magnificent view of the artificial port of Arromanches
– Cinéma Arromanches 360 °

Place of departure: Arromanches-les-Bains (14) – Gold Beach – On the heights of the city
Direction: Arromanches-les-bains (14) – Gold Beach – Downtown and beach
Itinerary (time of the journey: 3 minutes): leave the parking of the point of view and take the direction of the town center of Arromanches.
Car park: Town squares near the beach and the city center
Visit:
– Landing Museum, Place du 6 juin
– Walking tour of the historic site: the remains of the artificial port of Arromanches on the beach

Place of departure: Arromanches-les-Bains (14) – Gold Beach – Downtown and beach
Direction: Longues-sur-Mer (14) – German coastal battery
Itinerary (time of the journey: 10 minutes): leave Arromanches and take the D 514 in the direction of Longues-sur-Mer. In the city, follow the indications that lead to the German coastal battery.
Car park: on-site parking of the German coastal battery of Longues-sur-Mer
Visit:
– Walking tour of the historic site: the blockhouses and the observation post

Place of departure: Longues-sur-Mer (14) – German coastal battery
Direction: Bayeux (14) – British Military Cemetery
Itinerary (travel time: 15 minutes): exit Longues-sur-Mer and take the D 104 towards Bayeux. Follow the signs to the British military cemetery.
Car park: parking spaces near the cemetery
Visit:
– Walking tour of the military cemetery

Place of departure: Bayeux (14) – British military cemetery
Direction: Bayeux (14) – Museum of the Battle of Normandy
Itinerary (travel time: 2 minutes): continue on this same road in a southeasterly direction towards the Musée de la Bataille de Normandie.
