RIP George E. Koskimaki | 1922-2016

Signal Company – 506th PIR
101st Airborne Division

George E. Koskimaki was a radio operator on D-Day and jumped over Normandy on the night of June 5-6, 1944. As the radio operator for General Maxwell Taylor, commander of the 101st Airborne Division, he gained a comprehensive understanding of the historical events of the Battle of Normandy, which led him to become one of the division’s historians after the war. He wrote several books, including “The Battered Bastards of Bastogne,” “D-Day with the Screaming Eagles,” and “Hell’s Highway.”

He fought for freedom in Normandy, Holland (Operation Market Garden), the Ardennes, and Germany.

His grandson, Matthew Attilai, was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.
