(Small) Scare off Juno Beach
On Monday, June 6, 2005, in Courseulles-sur-Mer, around 8:30 p.m., British veterans were taken off Juno Beach in a medium-sized boat to commemorate the 61st anniversary of the Normandy landings. But the sea was rough, and the ship’s sailors were faced with a leak. They immediately contacted emergency services, and two SNSM (French National Society for Sea Rescue) vessels arrived to assist the endangered crew. Rescuers initially attempted to place the veterans on the rescue boats, but the swell was too strong, and the operation, which posed an additional danger, was canceled. Exceptionally, the SNSM volunteers requested that the ship, handicapped by the leak, proceed to the port of Courseulles, despite the storm. At 10:00 p.m., the crew arrived at the port, escorted by sea rescuers, and the veterans disembarked once again in Normandy, safe and sound, just as they had 61 years earlier.
