2017 D-Day Commemorations photos
On June 5, 2017, on the occasion of the 73rd anniversary of the Normandy landings, a memorial was inaugurated in honor of Charles Shay, a Native American who participated as a medic at the Omaha Beach landing with the 29th Infantry Division. After a ceremony organized at the American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer, the inauguration took place on the beach of Omaha, in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer. The unveiled monument depicts a tortoise, a symbol of longevity in Native American culture. This ceremony was attended by American veterans: Charles Shay and James Hamby (4th Infantry Division).
