George G. Klein, a veteran of the 2nd Ranger Battalion who climbed the Pointe du Hoc on June 6, 1944, and John T. Siewert, a veteran of the naval fire support aboard the USS Satterlee destroyer facing this same Pointe du Hoc, were honored By the D-Day Overlord association and the commune of Cricqueville-en-Bessin on 2 June 2017.
An oak of freedom was planted at the town hall and two plaques bearing the names of the veterans were unveiled. This ceremony also brought together the families of the two veterans, testifying the attachment of Normandy to the memory of the liberators and their relatives.
Two speeches were delivered by the Mayor of Cricqueville-en-Bessin, Mr. Leboucher, and the president of the D-Day Overlord association, Mr. Laurenceau, and veteran George G. Klein who thanked those present for this moving and convivial moment of remembrance.
