Long overlooked and ignored by historians, this raid of August 19, 1942 (which was a bloody failure for the Canadians, the British, and the French) is now the subject of numerous scholarly works, who, with supporting archives, can affirm the essential role played by Dieppe in the preparation and success of the landings of June 6, 1944, on the beaches of Calvados and the English Channel.

The latest book published on August 19, 1942, is that of our colleague Thierry Chion. In his work entitled « When the Americans Fought on August 19, 1942, » the Normandy-born journalist and historian recounts a little-known aspect of the Allied raid on Dieppe: how and why American troops participated in this operation, despite, at that time, the United States of America’s « neutrality. »
