Ouistreham 2009
Commemorations of the 65th anniversary of the Normandy landings
Location: Ouistreham-Riva-Bella
Date: 6 June 2009
Ceremonies: On the morning of Saturday, 6 June 2009, several ceremonies took place on Ouistreham Beach (Sword Beach sector). It was near this spot that on 6 June 1944, British commandos accompanied by 177 French soldiers from the Kieffer commando landed (at Colleville-Montgomery to be precise). 65 years later, six French veterans and twelve of their British comrades stood in formation, honouring their comrades who fell that day. A ceremony to award berets to the French marine commandos then took place, marking the baptism of Cours Fourer: Corporal Fourer had joined the FNFL in 1942 under the registration number 10407FN42, then volunteered for the commandos in June 1943. Taking part in the D-Day landings, this commando was killed in Amfreville on 10 June 1944.
