Batterie de Grandcamp-Maisy ouverte au public le 3 avril prochain...
"This is just a quick note to let you all know that Maisy Battery is open to
the public from the 3rd of April 2007.
3 Ranger veterans of D-day who have not seen each other for over 60 years
are coming back for the opening to unveil a plaque to their comrades.
They all belonged to A company - of the 5th Ranger Infantry Battalion and
they all landed at Omaha Beach on the morning of D-day.
2 of them were part of the Ranger squad from A company who succeeded in
advancing the furthest inland on D-day. 2 of them assisted the 2nd Rangers
at Pointe du Hoc and one was wounded at PdH.
One other was recommended for the Silver Star for his actions at Maisy and
another was given the Bronze Star for his actions at Maisy.
These are the real guys who are featured in "Saving Private Ryan" getting
off Omaha Beach.
Details on the battle for Maisy can be found on
www.armourer.co.uk/maisybattery.htm and if you would like more
information on visiting the site please just ask.
All the major tourist outlets in the region will be informed of the opening
and tens of thousands of leaflets are being distributed all along the
Normandy coast. The BBC will also be filming that week.
Maisy Battery is on the same main coastal road as Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc
at the small village of Maisy and indeed most of you will probably have
driven past the site without even knowing it is there.
There are over 1.5km of original German trenches and a large number of
subterranean buildings as well as gun pits, bunkers and tunnels. All set
below ground level - a truly unique experience and one which your customers
should be made aware of.
Once you visit you will fully understand why this site was able to maintain
fire against the allied landings for 4 days until it was captured by the US
5th Rangers on the 9th of June.
This site will give you the opportunity to visit a new and interesting part
of the Atlantic Wall and one which tells another part of the invasion
history. Its a must for your customers who can see something completely new
in Normandy."
