More than 4,000 young American Scouts gathered on Omaha Beach this Saturday, April 22, 2017. This is the eighth gathering since 1994.

The spectacle is unusual. Thousands of people gathered on Omaha Beach this Saturday, April 22, 2017, in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer near Bayeux. More than 4,000 of them are American Scouts, but nearly 400 French people also answered the call. Every three years, they come to the large gathering. In other words, a jamboree for discussing and meeting across borders.

“More than a scouting gathering, it’s a true pilgrimage for them,” emphasizes Louis Pelletier, a member of the Scouts and Guides of France from the former Lower Normandy region. “It’s a unique opportunity for them to come and discover the landing beaches where, for most of them, their grandparents died. In American culture, the beaches are more important to us than Verdun.”
