John White | 1923-2016

Troop 4
No3 Commando
1st Special Service Brigade

During the Second World War, John White joined the British Commando Corps and participated in numerous campaigns: in North Africa, Cyprus, Greece, and Sicily (where he was held prisoner by the Goring Panzer Division for about 15 hours before escaping).
He made his first landing in France on August 19, 1942, on the beach at Berneval-le-Grand as part of Operation Jubilee (also known as the Dieppe landings).

On June 6, 1944, he landed with Troop 4 of No. 3 Commando (1st Special Service Brigade) on Sword Beach and participated in the defense of the famous Pegasus Bridge and then in one of the assaults of the Merville Battery.

He was the last veteran of Operation Jubilee for No. 3 Commando to pass away.
