Edward Bullock | 1925-2016

1st Bn Highland Light Infantry
53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division

Edward Bullock joined the Royal Air Force at Cardington as an airborne engineer. He served at various bases in Bridlington, Teeling, and RAF Sutton Bridge. Edward was eventually transferred to the Army, joining the Durham Light Infantry (50th Infantry Division). Later, a few weeks after the outbreak of D-Day, he joined the 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division and fought in the Battle of Normandy south of Caen, notably in the fighting at Hill 112.

Edward Bullock then took part in Operation Market Garden in Holland and then in the fighting in the Belgian Ardennes. In early 1945, he crossed the Rhine and Elbe rivers and reached Hamburg, his last operational objective of the Second World War. After the German surrender, his unit became an occupation army and settled in Rendsburg on the North Sea-Baltic Canal, in northeast Schleswig-Holstein. It was there that he met his future wife.

Back in England, where he received his discharge order, he was joined by his wife, with whom he had five children. Having visited Normandy several times for commemorative ceremonies (most recently in June 2016), he distinguished himself by his joie de vivre and his legitimate pride in having participated in the liberation of France.
