“Pointe du Hoc had to be taken; the success of the D-Day landings depended on it.” 72 years after their heroic ascent, a tribute was paid to Colonel Rudder’s GIs.
A commemorative ceremony was held on June 6, 2016, at the foot of the Rangers’ monument, which has become a place of remembrance for many Americans and a symbol of the GIs’ sacrifice. Many local figures, such as Deputy Prefect Laurence Béguin, and Americans, such as U.S. Ambassador to France Jane Hartley, were in attendance.
