RIP Floyd Hicks | 1925-2016

LST 515
Task Force “U” (Utah)
Western Task Force
US Navy

Floyd Hicks enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school. During preparations for the Normandy landings, he participated in Exercise Tiger, a rehearsal for the D-Day landings held on the night of April 27-28, 1944. Serving aboard Landing Ship Tank 515, he was fired upon by German speedboats. LST 515 escaped unscathed, but 749 Allied personnel were killed in this tragic event.

Two months later, still aboard LST 515, Floyd was deployed during Operation Neptune to ensure the safe passage of American soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division to Utah Beach. After World War II, he returned to service to participate in the Korean War.
