After the French defeat in 1940 against German forces, Frenchman Yves Guéna heard General de Gaulle‘s appeal on June 18th and decided to join the resistance. He arrived in England a few days later and enlisted in the Free French Forces. Deployed to the North African front with the 1st Moroccan Spahi Marching Regiment (RMSM), he notably participated in the Second Battle of El Alamein from October to November 1942. In August 1944, as a lieutenant in the 4th Squadron of the 4th RMSM, he landed at Utah Beach with General Leclerc‘s 2nd French Armored Division and participated in the Battle of Normandy, during which he was seriously wounded.
After the war, he was admitted to the École Nationale d’Administration (1st class) and entered politics. Mayor, deputy, senator and minister, Yves Guéna was the 7th president of the French Constitutional Council.
